Digital Collage Project

Create a multi-media memory from your experiences during the Alex's Virtual Lemonade Stand Project!

This project will be a a digital story of your community service project.  It will involve photographs and/or video from your first initial lesson or conversations on youth service, through the final (or close to it) lesson and activities.

LESSON PLAN

Materials:
i
movie or Garageband or similar software
Digital video camera (optional)
Digital camera

Begin with this question:

Ask students: What does you think it means to make a difference?

Record:
Get recordings of kids narrating their response. Have them write a few sentences responding to this question first, practice reading their sentences and then record.  If you have computers with iMovie or Garageband or even Power Point, you can record right onto the program.

Continue with Questions:
Proceed each day, or every few days with other questions related to your initial question. Other questions could include:

  • Where have you seen other kids making a difference?
  • Can kids really make a difference in the world?  If so, how
  • In what ways can someone make a difference?
  • How do you know when someone makes a difference?

Continue with these questions, and invite kids to create their own questions for the class.  Repeat the writing process. This could be a homework assignment.  Only record a few responses per segment at a time (each question can be a different segment.)

Take photos of your students during the process or record video. Let the students be the photographers and videographers as well! This will give them an opportunity to capture things from their own perspective.

Go through your video/photo collections and find photos/videoclips relating to what the kids are saying. Drop the photos and video over the voice recordings.  Add music to spice it up!

Be creative:  Do you have a cool rap or song the kids made? How about a poem?  Think out of the box on this one.  Record it and integrate it into your digital collage box.

Publishing: Export your collage as quicktime file or Mp4. Post it on your school's website (if you have permission!) or create you own class DVDs. Make copies for students to keep.

Further Extensions: Use your digital collage project as your school's presentation during the celebration videoconference!
