Somebodies, Anybodies and Nobodies: Meet the Mysterious N. E. Bode! He's coming out of hiding! This fall, the charming, elusive novelist N.E. Bode will be sighted on MAGPI's network for a seventy-five -minute interactive videoconference with students in grades 4-7!
Author of The Anybodies, The Nobodies, The Somebodies, and this fall's The Slippery Map, N.E. Bode (pen name of writer Julianna Baggott) will delight students with his hilarious tales of adventure and fantasy. Bode, whose talents were never really recognized by his very famous writing professor, will inspire and entertain young writers in your classroom!
Students participating in this event should be familiar with one or more of N. E. Bode's novels (listed below). Students will have ample opportunity to ask questions during this fun, engaging and interactive learning experience!
Each participating teacher will receive a copy of Bode's book, The Anybodies , courtesy of Harper Collins. Don't forget to check out some of the great resources below when preparing your students for this great event!

Preparing Students:
Prepare your Site Introduction! During the videoconference, each site will have an opportunity to introduce themselves. Introductions must be less than 30 seconds and should include:
- Your school's name
- Your location
- Introduction of the class (i.e. "This is Ms. Smith's 2nd Grade Class)
- An interesting fact about your school or community
Prepare Questions: Have students come up with questions for N.E. Bode about his work, his background, how he bacame a writer, etc. As a class, choose the top 5 questions. Make sure students are prepared to ask these questions as part of the videoconference event. Each school will have a chance to ask at least 2 questions - - but by preparing 5, we can make sure that questions aren't repeated.
Follow-Up Activities (After the Videoconference!):
Class Reflection: After the videoconference, please craft a CLASS REFLECTION to the videoconference event and post it to the Creative Minds Blog under the blog entry titled: N.E. Bode. The reflection might include the following: What did you learn from the videoconference? What surprised you? What questions do you still have? What did you agree with and what did you disagree with? Visit the blog and comment on other classes' reflections!

About Julianna Baggott (who writes for children under the penname N.E. Bode):
Julianna Baggott received her MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1994. Her first novel, Girl Talk, was published by Simon and Schuster's Pocket Books in February 2001. A national bestseller, Girl Talk was also published by six publishing houses overseas. Her collection of poems, This Country of Mothers, followed in April 2001 published by Southern Illinois University Press. Her second novel, The Miss America Family, was published by Pocket Books in April 2002 and hit the Boston Globe's Bestsellers List. Baggott's third novel, The Madam - based on the life of her grandmother who was raised in a house of prostitution in the twenties and thirties - was published in September 2003 from Atria Books, a division of Simon and Schuster, and was a Boston Herald book club selection.
Baggott's debut novel for kids, under the pen name N.E. Bode, The Anybodies, was published by HarperCollins in spring 2004 and was a Children's Book of Month Club selection, a Washington Post Book-of-the-Week, a Booksense selection, and a People Magazine book pick. The Nobodies followed in 2005 and then The Somebodies in 2006, which won a Gold Medal in the Florida Book Awards. She will publish The Slippery Map in the fall of 2007, as well as the prequel novel to Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium, a movie starring Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman, and Justin Bateman. Her work has appeared Poetry, The Southern Review, Ms. Magazine, Glamour, TriQuarterly, Best American Poetry 2000, as well as read on NPR's "Here and Now" and "Talk of the Nation," and at Symphony Space. She broadcasts monthly hour-long specials in the voice of N.E. Bode, her pen name, on XMRadio, XMKids. She teaches at Florida State University's Creative Writing Program. She lives in Florida with her husband, writer David G.W. Scott, and their three young children.
