Program Dates: (Participation in all programs required) October 4, 2006 at 3:30 p.m. EST: Teacher PD Session * all programs are approximately 1 hour Program Description Exciting photo-stories of real kids - combined with Photography and Literacy (PAL) questions - will keep your students fully engaged while helping them to better appreciate cultural perspectives and global issues. Using photography from celebrated photojournalist Joan S. Klatchko, two videoconference programs will take your students straight into the lives of other kids who live in the Australian desert and in the rainforest in Borneo - - bringing the world right into your classroom! Students will explore how kids - - just like themselves - - interact with others and the environments in which they live. A culminating project has students explore their own communities through photojournalism. Our last videoconference is a collaborative session where students share their work in an engaging mystery game! A pre-project professional development seminar with Joan Klatchko will help you integrate literacy through photography into your classroom and work with your students through this inquiry-based process. Goals This project aims to create "global students" for a global world by presenting stories that connect kids, cultures, countries and curriculum. The collaborative videoconference events are meant to show the challenges, obstacles, accomplishments and discoveries of a photojournalist exploring the world are shared by anyone who sets off on a journey of exploration. Requirements for Participation Teachers that register their classes for this event will commit to having their students:
Additionally, participating teachers must participate in a professional development/shared-curriculum virtual planning meeting. Please note that this program is most effective when only one class at participates from a site.
