Look at what students found out about Coober Pedy! About the Event/Curriculum Ties: Students will explore "home life" in Outback Australia. Students will gain knowledge of geography, social studies, global issues and the environment as they sharper their visual literacy skills. Pre-videoconference activities will give students a chance to hone their research skills. Students will be required to present as part of the videoconference event, providing an authentic context for public speaking practice. Pre-Videoconference Activities: Expose Students to LTP Pedagogy: Teachers will download and give a mini-lesson on dissecting a photograph/literacy through photography. Lesson plan materials and example photographs will be provided prior to the teacher professional development session. Research Outback Australia: Each participating class will be assigned a particular concept to research as it relates to Outback Australia. For example, one class might examine climate while another class examines agricultural resources. Teachers will be provided with a handout to distribute to students that will assist with researching their concept. Prepare Presentation: Based on the information students gain through their research, put together a 2 minute presentation to deliver as part of the videoconference event. Be sure to practice in front of the videoconference camera! Write a Paragraph: As a class, write and submit a short paragraph - - no more than 4 sentences - - about what you find. Paragraphs from all participating schools will be incorporated into a handout that teachers can download and distribute to students after the videoconference. Videoconference Outline
Post-Conference Activities Review Information: Download the handout (filled out collaboratively with all the other participating schools!) and review the information with your students. You may want to think about creating a jeaopardy game and "quizzing" students on their new knowledge of Outback Australia. Creative Writing: Each class will receive a single photo. Have your students use their "Literacy through photography" skills to write a creative story about the photo. Make sure the story incorporates the 5 essential questions! |
