About Photography and Literacy (PAL): The Photography and Literacy (PAL) Program is a unique methodology that assigns a specific set of questions - based on visual literacy and language arts - to each photograph in the story. Students become eagle-eyed 'Photo-Detective' as they search each visual for 'clues'; an exploration that transforms every story into a journey leading to core-curriculum subjects such as social studies, geography, science, math and environmental studies- and improving language arts and visual literacy skills in the process. PAL Professional Development Videoconference Seminar Before having students take part in the Exploring with Photojournalist Joan Klatchko program, participating teachers must attend a virtual profesional development seminar, conducted via videoconference. This collaborative seminar, led by Joan Klatchko, will detail literacy through photography pedagogy and take teachers through the curriculum of the "Exploring with Joan Klatchko" project. After the seminar, teachers will begin to expose students to the pedagogy prior to their first videoconference event.
