Alcohol and the Developing Brain: How can we protect our elementary school students? (K12) Almost 20% of our nation's youth will have had their first full drink of alcohol before they complete 6th grade. Early alcohol use can have devastating effects on learning and academic performance, as well as increase chances of later alcohol addiction four-fold. This interactive presentation will help elementary teachers and administrators understand how they can use information about the developing brain to help young children make healthy and safe choices. Actual demonstrations of lesson plans featuring local elementary students will enliven this informative and practical presentation. Protecting You/Protecting Me, an evidence-based curriculum developed by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and published by Hazelden, will be featured as an example of brain-based prevention in action! Bullying 101: Creating a Respectful School (K12) According to research conducted by the National Education Association, 160,000 children stay home from school each day to avoid bullying. Elementary and middle-school administrators, counselors and teachers who are concerned about the effects of bullying on children will benefit from this informative and interactive presentation. Participants will learn the 10 characteristics of an effective bullying prevention program, watch the "bullying prevention circle" in action, and hear administrators, parents, and teachers talk about bullying and what can be done to prevent it. This program will feature the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, an evidence-based school climate-change program developed at Clemson University with Dr. Dan Olweus, pre-eminent bullying researcher from Norway.
